North Menan Butte Trail This relatively easy hike takes you on a satisfying loop around the rim of an extinct volcano that overlooks Rigby and the Snake River to the south. There's some quite impressive elevation gain here – you are climbing a mountain after all. The trail is very well used, so there shouldn't be any danger of losing it; the portion near the trailhead is paved and even has a restroom. When you've navigated the switchbacks and reached the edge of the cauldron, head either left or right and follow the trail around the rim for a 2-mile loop. 2. Lookout Mountain Trails One of several mountains in the state called “Lookout Mountain”, this particular peak makes for a gentle uphill climb that's only a short drive to the east of Rigby. The climb takes you through several trails in the network, starting from the parking lot off Kelly Canyon Road, start by taking the Hawley Gulch Upper Trail from the far side of the parking lot, and continue up the ridge, then down and back into the trees. Continue until you come to an intersection, then take the four-wheeler trail up to the summit. Stick to the right of the trail and take the small sections of singletrack that branch off into the trees if you want to get off the ATV route. There are great views from the top out over Snake Plane. 3. Big Hole Crest And Rocky Peak Trails Continuing on past Lookout Mountain takes you into the Big Hole Mountains, and extension of the larger Snake Range to the south, on the other side of Pine Creek Pass. The Big Hole Crest Trail takes you right into the heart of the range and is a tough hike that's a challenge for hikers of all abilities.  The best way to get to this fairly remote trail is to start with the Rocky Peak Trail, which starts from State Highway 31 near the junction with the BPA Road. The Rocky Peak Trail is little used and is challenging in itself and is an uphill scramble over loose rocks and rugged terrain. The trail joins Big Hole Crest at a three-way junction with Drake Creek Trail, which leads back towards the highway, while Big Hole Crest follows a ridgeline with amazing views when you're out of the trees. The best way back to civilization is via the North Mahogany Trail, which brings the total distance to about 17 miles of steep, rocky terrain.
